Alex Palmer is set to sign a new three-year deal at West Bromwich Albion after being tipped to force his way into Slaven Bilic’s plans this summer, the Express and Star reports.

Five years ago, a teenage shot-stopper found himself on the Baggies bench for a Premier League clash with Arsenal.

But if he had hoped that this would kick-start his West Brom career, he has been sadly disappointed.

Flash forward to the present day and Palmer, now 23 years of age, is still awaiting his first-team debut for the Midland giants.

But, after a superb season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, a permanent place in the West Brom squad appears to be within his grasp.

Both Jonathan Bond and Ali Al-Habsi are set to leave West Brom this summer, opening up a space for Palmer to establish himself at long last.

“Alex could find himself in West Brom’s first-team squad next season, whether that’s second choice, third choice, being around it,” Plymouth manager Ryan Lowe told the E&S of a goalkeeper who helped Argyle secure promotion from League Two with 14 clean sheets in 37 games.

“I think he’s back training with them. Could he go to the Championship? Yeah, 100 per cent.”

The Express and Star reports that Palmer is now set to sign a new contract which will keep him at West Brom until the summer of 2023.

The smart money, then, is on the Baggies academy graduate taking up the ‘number two’ role behind Sam Johnstone next season.
