Well, Newcastle United’s FA Cup adventure has come to an end.
The Magpies were denied a spot in the semi-final of the competition after losing 2-0 to Manchester City at St James’s Park.
Newcastle were forced to endure an utter onslaught from Pep Guardiola’s side during the first 45 minutes, and yet it was only a Kevin De Bruyne penalty that separated both teams at half-time.
Raheem Sterling killed the tie off midway through the second half – moments after Dwight Gayle missed a sitter for Steve Bruce’s side – and overall it wasn’t a dreadful defeat for the hosts.
It could’ve been far worse if not for Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Bruce surprised United fans before kickoff by playing the English stopper ahead of Martin Dubravka, but the gamble appeared to pay off as Darlow made a number of smart saves – including two to keep out Sterling.
This was only the 29-year-old’s seventh senior appearance for the club in two years and despite potential rust, gave a very good account of himself.
Here’s how Newcastle fans reacted to his display on Twitter:
