Jack Wilshere has stated that Alexandre Lacazette ‘would be a contender’ as Arsenal’s next captain, as he told talkSPORT.
The free-agent, who is currently training with Arsenal, also added that ‘you don’t need to be vocal’ to put on the armband now.
Arsenal stripped Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy this week, after manager Mikel Arteta was left unimpressed with another ‘disciplinary breach’.
Not only is the Gabon international no longer skipper, but he has also been left out of Arsenal’s last two matches.
The Gunners ended up winning both, including against West Ham on Wednesday night.
Wilshere was at the game and he shared that Lacazette was ‘different class’ and reacted to the suggestion of the Frenchman replacing Aubameyang as captain.
On whether he has had a GK as captain “Yes, I had Petr Czech as captain,” said Wilshere.
“I don’t think you have to be that vocal. Do you have to be that vocal now to be a captain? There are different types of captains where you lead with the way you play.
“Lacazette was different class last night. He would be a contender.”
It just would be typical of Arsenal to hand the armband to someone who is out-of-contract at the end of the season.
There is no doubt that Lacazette is a player who does give his all and he has been leading the team out in recent matches.
He has backed it up with performances by scoring against Southampton and then supplying Gabriel Martinelli with the assist against the Hammers.
But, as things stand, Lacazette is heading for the Emirates exit door, so are Arsenal going to go down the farcical road of Manchester United and get an interim in place before replacing someone long-term?
