Graeme Souness blasted Steven Bergwijn on Sky Sports during Tottenham’s defeat to Brighton on Sunday for his lack of effort when sprinting back to defend.

The outspoken pundit compared the Spurs winger to Mo Salah and how the Liverpool man was busting a gut for his team during their win at West Ham only hours earlier.

The moment in which Souness was making reference to was when Brighton were hitting Spurs on the counter late in the second half, and Bergwijn was seen jogging back – that action of play resulted in Toby Alderweireld having to make a last-ditch tackle on the line.

It didn’t impress Souness in the Sky studios and he made his feelings clear towards the £27 million [BBC Sport] Spurs player.

“The Liverpool game when Origi goes down injured late in the game,” said Souness. “Salah’s sprinting back. Salah, who we all know is a greedy so-and-so. But one of the best out there.

“He’s sprinting back and heading the ball on his goalline near enough, for the cause. Why cannot Bergwijn do that? That’s the difference between proper players.”

A number of the Tottenham players could be questioned, as Jose Mourinho’s side go through a pretty difficult period.

As per, Mourinho will be the one to don the spotlight, but his players need to step up and showcase their worth.

Without Harry Kane, life has become more difficult for the North London club and the heat in the kitchen will only increase ahead of their showdown with rivals Chelsea on Thursday.
