Tottenham Hotspur could catch Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.

Dietmar Hamann - Manchester City celebrates

Former Newcastle United and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann was not impressed with Tottenham Hotspur in the first half of the season.

Back in November 2016, Hamann made some really damning comments about Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“Tottenham have come behind to get results against West Ham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton this season and there are positives in that,” Hamann wrote on Paddypower.com on November 25, 2016.

“It shows they have character. But character only gets you so far. To be consistently successful you need substance. And Tottenham don’t have enough. If they manage to get in the top four this season that will be a huge achievement for them.”

Tottenham lost 2-1 Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a day after Hamann’s column on Paddypower.com was published, and indeed things were looking a bit bleak for them at the time.

The North London outfit were knocked out of the Champions League in November, star defender Toby Alderweireld was injured, and attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen was not playing well.

Hamann’s comments about Spurs lacking substance, though, look silly now. Chelsea are still at the top of the Premier League, but it is Tottenham who are their closest challengers for the title.

While Arsenal and Manchester United are fighting for a place in the top four, Spurs are aiming for the title.

If results go their way this evening, then Pochettino’s side could end up only four points behind Chelsea.

Liverpool are not in the title race and neither are Manchester City at the moment. If Spurs do not have substance, then how come they are the only team who appear to be the main challengers to Chelsea?
