Former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder Dietmar Hamann has defended Everton defender Ashley Williams on social networking site Twitter.

Williams gave away a late penalty during Everton’s Premier League game against Manchester United away from home at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

The 32-year-old Wales international central defender, who joined the Toffees from Swansea City in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million, handled the ball inside the penalty box and was sent off.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted the 94th minute penalty and helped United pick up a 1-1 draw with Everton at Old Trafford.

Visitors Everton had just 38% of the possession, took 11 shots of which four were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.
