Liverpool may not be big spenders in the transfer market this summer, but they continue to be linked with possible signings.
The Reds have wrapped up the Premier League title, and Jurgen Klopp will be keen to strengthen ahead of next season.
Money will be tight due to the global pandemic though, and Liverpool will have to be clever in the transfer market – as they often have been under Michael Edwards.
The biggest rumour surrounding Liverpool right now concerns Thiago. The Bayern Munich midfielder has just one year left on his contract, and looks set to leave this summer.
SPORT in Spain reported that Liverpool were closing in on Thiago, with negotiations at a ‘very advanced’ stage.
Bayern allegedly want €35million (£32million) for Thiago, a fee that Liverpool would want to split into instalments rather than paying in one lump.
At 29, the midfielder doesn’t exactly fit what Edwards usually does in terms of recruitment, as he prefers to land players with potential or approaching their prime years.
That does make a move seem unlikely, but ex-Liverpool and Bayern ace Dietmar Hamann has told Abendzeitung Muenchen that he thinks a move to Liverpool is the ‘most likely option’ for Thiago.
Hamann noted that he doesn’t fit the usual Liverpool profile, but Klopp needs a technican in midfield – and whilst Hamann likes to watch Thiago, he doesn’t think Bayern will particularly miss him.
“At 29, he doesn’t quite fit the profile of the Reds’ purchasing policy. Nevertheless, a transfer would make sense in my eyes, because Jürgen Klopp has more workhorses in his midfield with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita and could use a technician like Thiago well,” said Hamann. “On the other hand, he had a Bayern contract ready for signature. I would be surprised if he didn’t have a lot of offers. Otherwise you won’t reject it. If he really wants to leave, the club should not make too much effort to keep him. The Bayern bosses do not submit such an offer twice.”
“That would be a very good deal in Corona times, Liverpool certainly wants to keep the price down. Thiago is 29 and when everyone is fit in the Bayern midfield around Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Thomas Müller, he sits on the bench. Thiago certainly has brilliant moments, I like to watch him. But the hard facts are: Bayern was never in a Champions League final with him. The bottom line is still the most likely option for me to go to Liverpool,” he added.
