‘Dier was screaming’: Journalist says Dier gave one Spurs player an ear-bashing on Sunday

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, journalist Alasdair Gold has been dissecting Spurs’ game against Newcastle over the weekend.

Tottenham beat the Magpies 3-2 in what was a rather impressive performance, but the reality is that the London club’s showing could have been better.

Indeed, at the end of the day, Spurs still conceded two against Newcastle and they looked exposed at the back on a number of occasions.

Cristian Romero put in a solid showing, but Gold noted how he was being overly aggressive at times during the game, leading to Eric Dier giving him a bit of an ear-bashing at one point.

Gold was speaking about Romero’s performance at the weekend.

“He feels he has to be too aggressive and he lunges into challenges which leaves loads of space behind if he messes it up. We saw it against Villa and we saw it a few times again at St James’ Park. There was one moment where Eric Dier was screaming at him, telling him to stay away. Romero was trying to come across and cover for Dier, and Dier told him to stay over because he was leaving a huge gap behind him and Spurs managed to get away with it,” Gold said.

Needs to adapt

Romero needs to adapt to life in the Premier League.

It’s all well and good trying to be an all-action centre-back, and perhaps you can get away with that in Serie A where the pace of the game is slightly slower, but not in the Premier League.

Dier gave Romero a bit of an ear-bashing at the weekend and hopefully, this is an experience that the Argentine will learn from and he’ll defend in a more controlled manner from now on.
