Tottenham Hotspur travel to South Wales to take on Swansea City on Sunday in an intriguing clash which will see Jack Cork and Eric Dier go head-to-head.

The latter has been superb for Spurs this season, playing in a defensive midfield role and putting in performances which have earned widespread praise among Premier League observers.

Not making Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad has come as a big surprise, though such recognition will surely come his way if he continues to catch the eye at White Hart Lane.

On Sunday, Dier travels with his Tottenham teammates to the Liberty Stadium and the youngster will have to be at his very best once again up against an excellent Swansea midfield.

Boasting Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Cork in the middle, the Welsh outfit have plenty of quality, with the latter in particular impressing this season, as shown above in the table provided by Opta Stats.

The former Southampton midfielder has statistically outshone Dier in as many as five key categories, posting more interceptions and ball recoveries per Premier League match.

Moreover, Cork is an extremely talented player on the ball and also averages more touches, accurate passes and chances created per league match than Tottenham’s latest fans’ favourite.

Dier may well be unlucky not to receive an England call-up, though some could argue the game’s real underrated star is Cork who has not tasted international recognition since the 2012 Olympics.

The Swansea man has featured for the England U21 side, but now at 26, he is very much overlooked in the England camp and for a player of his quality on the ball that’s quite a sad predicament.
