It was against West Ham United in 2014 that Eric Dier made his Tottenham Hotspur debut, and he marked the occasion by getting on the scoresheet.

Against the same opponents last night, however, Dier didn’t have a game to remember as he produced an underwhelming performance in the 1-1 draw at Wembley.

Dier failed to provide the requisite protection to the Tottenham defence, while he was guilty of being rather too safe with his passing, which meant that his side struggled to muster much in the way of attacking momentum.

Having previously filled in at centre-back, Dier is now back playing in midfield but it is questionable whether he warrants a place in the starting lineup when all of Mauricio Pochettino’s main options are fully fit.

Victor Wanyama has missed the majority of the campaign so far due to injury but the Kenyan is slowly being eased back into action and featured as a substitute against both Swansea City and West Ham.

When at his best Wanyama is capable of making a major impact for Tottenham given his strength and passing, and it surely won’t be too long until he forces his way back into the starting lineup.

Dier, on account of his performance last night, could well find his starting berth at risk in the near future.

It is, of course, possible for Tottenham to deploy Wanyama alongside Dier, but Harry Winks will be pushing for a starting place and Pochettino could soon have some difficult decisions to make.
