Diego Poyet has been linked with a move to Derby County or Rangers.

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are keen to sign free agent Diego Poyet – but he’s been linked with Championship outfit Derby County too.

Poyet, 21, emerged as one of the Football League’s top young talents during his time with Charlton Athletic, and after just 23 appearances for the Addicks, he was snapped up by West Ham United.

With three Premier League appearances in his first season with the Hammers, Poyet looked to be heading towards a bright future in claret and blue, but he spent most of last season on loan at MK Dons and later returned for a spell at Charlton.

On deadline day back in August, Poyet was released from his contract at the London Stadium, and reports suggest that the midfielder – who can play for England, Spain or Uruguay at international level – could find a club imminently.

The Sun initially reported earlier this week that Poyet was closing in on a deal to join Derby County, but The Scottish Sun now claim that Rangers are looking to land Poyet as a replacement for outgoing midfielder Joey Barton.

Poyet has been bombarded with questions about his future this week, and took to Twitter to deny that he is training with Derby, though did add that they are a ‘great club’ – and this may be a boost for Rangers.

Poyet faces a big decision over his future and has to join a club where he can be valued, as he failed to make an impact at West Ham – and Rangers may just be ideal for that.

With Joey Barton heading out of Ibrox, Niko Kranjcar out with a long-term injury, and both Matt Crooks and Jordan Rossiter enduring injury woes in their first few months at Rangers, there’s certainly a spot for midfielder to come in and play some games for Warburton’s men.

Add in that he would be playing front of the huge Ibrox crowds every week and potentially competing for a spot in next season’s Europa League, and Poyet may be better heading to Glasgow than trying to squeeze into Derby’s midfield.

Steve McClaren already has the likes of Jacob Butterfield, Will Hughes, Bradley Johnson, Craig Bryson and Jamie Hanson who can play in central midfield, and with George Thorne working his way back from injury, Poyet would be at risk of finding himself on the fringes again, as he was at West Ham, meaning he should maybe look at a move to Rangers over signing for the Rams.
