Diego Llorente would be an excellent signing for Tottenham, has bargain release clause

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the Real Sociedad defender.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly after Real Sociedad centre-back Diego Llorente as Mauricio Pochettino seemingly draws up targets for the summer – and his reported release clause would make him an excellent signing.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham are all interested in landing the impressive defender who is also being tracked by last season’s Champions League semi-finalists AS Roma.

A Real Madrid academy product, 25-year-old Llorente made only three appearances for the senior side before joining Rayo Vallecano on loan during 2015-16 and then Malaga during 2016-17. He joined Sociedad permanently in July 2017.

He has since turned out 48 times for the La Liga outfit, becoming renowned as a goalscoring defender with seven goals in those matches. He has a contract at Sociedad until the summer of 2022.

Spurs are hardly lacking in centre-backs. They have Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth as options, while Eric Dier can fill in at the heart of the defence and Cameron Carter-Vickers is out on loan.

But there is no doubt that Llorente would be an excellent signing for Spurs, given his form for Sociedad and that both Alderweireld has a £25million release clause (Guardian) and Vertonghen is 32 in April.

But the reason Llorente would be an excellent signing, is because Mundo Deportivo have previously claimed that the two-time Spain international has a release clause of just £22million.

With Spurs spending more and more over their original budget on the new Stadium, chairman Daniel Levy is keeping a tight stronghold on the Tottenham coffers. Indeed, Spurs have not signed a single player since January 2018.

But for a player of Llorente’s worth and potential, £22million is a bargain and would prove to be an excellent signing on the cheap if Spurs do indeed land the former Real Madrid star’s signature.
