Nacer Chadli has been speaking to Het Laatste Niuews about his time at Tottenham, and why he felt he had to leave Spurs.

Why Nacer Chadli left Tottenham

Well, the Belgium international did fairly well in N17 after joining from Twente in 2013.

Chadli scored 25 goals in 119 appearances for Tottenham, although he has now revealed that he decided to leave after Mauricio Pochettino lost trust in him.

Speaking to Het Laatste Niuews, the 33-year-old said: “I left Tottenham because I wanted to play more. That didn’t work out there at the end. The coach (Mauricio Pochettino) no longer counted on me.

“That first year at West Brom was super, but in my second season I was almost constantly injured, and we got relegated. Those injuries didn’t help me.”

Sadly – as Chadli states – injuries got the better of him after he departed north London in search of game time.

The Belgian, who now plays for İstanbul Başakşehir but is currently on loan at K.V.C. Westerlo, missed all of the Turkish side’s UEFA Conference League qualifying matches this summer due to injury.

Things appear to be improving on that front, as Chadli has since made successive appearances for K.V.C. Westerlo.

Hopefully, he can stay out of the treatment room and enjoy an injury free end to his impressive career.

Nacer Chadli was unlucky at Tottenham

In our view, Chadli simply played for Tottenham at a bad time.

At that point, Pochettino had many attacking options to choose from, such as Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Erik Lamela, Dele Alli and others.

Therefore, it was difficult to give Chadli the game time he wanted, despite the fact that he was clearly an impressive technician who had a lot to offer in the Premier League – his ten goal involvements in 31 Premier League games for West Brom the season after he left Tottenham proves that.

Chadli has also won 66 caps for Belgium throughout his career, which further proves his quality given the wealth of attacking talent under Roberto Martinez during this golden generation – see Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

Whatever happens, the Belgian didn’t let anyone down at Spurs, and he should be fondly remembered in N17.
