Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur coach Antonio Conte should’ve started Lucas Moura on Tuesday.

What a disappointing afternoon it was for Tottenham – and particularly, Dele Alli. Spurs went to Southampton and returned to North London with a point.

It doesn’t look like a bad result, but when you consider that Tottenham faced 10 men for well over half the game following Mohammed Salisu, it’s absolutely two points dropped.

This was only Alli’s second Premier League start since September but the 25-year-old failed to justify Antonio Conte’s decision to include him.

The former MK Dons midfield certainly worked hard but he struggled in a major way to have a positive impact.

And Tim Sherwood, speaking to Optus Sport, admitted that it just ‘didn’t happen’ for Alli, claiming that he would’ve started Lucas Moura instead.

He told Optus Sport: “They had firepower on the bench to come on. Lucas Moura, I would’ve started him personally. He tried to give Dele some minutes but it didn’t happen for him today.”

Struggling

Alli is struggling in a massive way to get his confidence back.

Since Mauricio Pochettino left Tottenham well over two years ago, the England international has been getting progressively worse.

Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo failed to trigger a revival and if Conte also fails on this front then, well, you worry for the player.

There’s been tentative talk about him leaving the Lilywhites in January and although it’ll break a lot of Spurs fans’ hearts, given how influential he once was, you have to ask: does he deserve to stay?

Sentimental reasons aside, he’s clinging on to his Tottenham career and maybe, just maybe, severing ties is for the best.
