Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher praised the ‘big’ and ‘powerful’ Sebastian Coates for netting a brace in the Champions League, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (19/10/21 at 7:05 pm).

The former Liverpol centre-back helped Sporting Lisbon beat Besiktas 4-1 on Tuesday night, in what was his side’s first win of this season’s competition.

It has been six years since Coates left Liverpool, and whilst he spent his time in the colours of Sunderland during that period, he has since picked up his career in Portugal.

During his time at Anfield, both Carragher and Coates would have played alongside each other.

And the TV pundit joked that Coates didn’t play on Merseyside because of him, but Carragher was serious when he stated that it just ‘didn’t happen’ for him in Liverpool colours.

“He didn’t play at Liverpool because I was playing,” said Carragher. “He has done something, which I didn’t do too often, which is score from a set-pieces.

“He’s a big, powerful centre-back, it didn’t happen for him in the Premier League, certainly at Liverpool.

“But the first two goals he gets, they are very reminiscent of each other really.”

Sporting weren’t the only side scoring for fun on the road in Europe this week because Liverpool scored three at Atletico Madrid.

Mo Salah netted a brace during that game, although James Milner will claim the opener, in what was an action-packed showdown in Spain.

This Liverpool side are proven European champions before, and after an injury-hit season last time out, many of them will be hoping to get their engines going for this campaign.

If they can repeat these current performances for large parts of this campaign, then there’s no reason why another Champions League crown can’t be added to the club’s cabinet.
