Graeme Souness has defended Neco Williams claiming that he ‘didn’t do anything wrong’ after he was substituted at half-time during Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Brighton on Wednesday night, as he told Sky Sports (08/07/20, 8 pm start).

Klopp opted to start the youngster at left-back for Andrew Robertson, but during the break, with the game in the balance at 2-1, he was hooked off.

Williams, who was also on a yellow card and that could be behind the reason in him being subbed, was also playing out of position as Souness defended him during the break.

“He didn’t do anything wrong,” Souness told Sky Sports. “He didn’t do anything wrong. Maybe he is feeling something? I cannot think of why he would take him off.

“I wouldn’t be putting that down to him solely [On Brighton’s opening goal]. I think it’s more what happened in the middle, with Trent and the far side will be looking at that.”

Whilst Brighton’s goal came from Willams’ side, he had a steady 45 minutes and will be hoping to earn more starts before the end of the campaign.

With the Premier League title in the bag, Klopp can afford to play more of his younger players as the Reds chase the records.

Following that defeat to Manchester City, the champions have bounced back with back-to-back wins and they will be hoping to reach a record 100 points before the season ends.
