Didier Drogba has sent a touching message to England captain and Tottenham star Harry Kane after the Three Lions ace missed a crucial penalty that ultimately saw England lose to France 2-1 at the World Cup on Saturday evening.

Kane, 29, had netted a penalty earlier in the match to pull England level. That was after Aurelien Tchouameni’s stunning strike had given France the lead. Olivier Giroud made it 2-1 with an expert header from close range. Then, a penalty.

Against his Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, Kane had the chance to take the game into extra-time. It came after a bizarre challenge from Theo Hernandez on Mason Mount – but Kane smashed the penalty over. The nation, heartbroken.

France progress to take on Morocco and England are coming home. But Kane has earned plenty of support on social media and his performances at the World Cup are deserving of it. Drogba, a Chelsea legend, applauded the Spurs man.

Indeed, Kane has been excellent at the World Cup. Two goals, both in the knockout rounds, and three assists in the groups. It means Kane finishes with stats of five goal involvements in five games. A shame, he could not make it six.

As many alluded to, Kane is of a mentality that is so strong. He will be able to put this aside in due course and get over it. The support from fans will certainly help. Spurs are back in action on December 26, and his club will need Kane.

What will help Kane is the knowledge that Euro 2024 is only 18 months around the corner. The chance to right the wrongs of the World Cup in Qatar – and perhaps, Kane will still be just as important come the 2026 World Cup.
