The Reds are some people’s dark horses for the title this year.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has told Paddy Power that Liverpool will need to improve mentally and psychologically to challenge for the title.

The Reds were in impressive form last weekend as they beat current champions Leicester City 4-1 at Anfield.

It was a consummate performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have started the season relatively strongly.

Some are talking about them as potential title contenders given the quality in their squad and the fact they do not have European football to contend with this season.

They have, however, suffered a setback in the 2-0 loss to newly promoted Burnley in their second game.

That was a game they should be winning comfortably, and Hamann says they will have to improve their record in those kind of gritty matches if they are to be title contenders.

“Mentally and psychologically Liverpool will need to improve to challenge for the title,” he told Paddy Power.

“Jurgen Klopp needs to mould his side and instill this psychology, but the players have to do their part as well. Klopp has brought a new belief to Anfield, but the players have to maintain that belief when the chips are down.”

Liverpool are currently seventh in the table with seven points from their first four games.

They return to action on Friday evening when they take on Antonio Conte’s in-form Chelsea team at Stamford Bridge. A win in that game could see them go as high as second in the table, at least temporarily.
