Pedro Obiang was linked with the West Ham United exit for much of the summer, but ended up staying put.

For much of the summer, it appeared that Pedro Obiang would end the window having brought the curtain down on his West Ham career with plenty of speculation linking the Spaniard with the London Stadium exit.

As reported by Football London, Sampdoria were keen to re-sign the 26-year-old and the midfielder was interested in the idea of returning to Italy after three years in the Premier League.

However, that same report from Football London suggests that the Irons blocked Obiang’s exit, but are open to considering a sale next summer.

But after his first performance of the new season, perhaps Manuel Pellegrini is wondering why West Ham did not decide to cash in on the midfielder during the window. Though it must be mentioned that the deadline for most European clubs has not passed just yet.

Obiang was extremely poor while he was on the pitch during the Hammers’ Carabao Cup tie with AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday. He was booked early on and replaced at the break by Felipe Anderson when the visitors were 1-0 down. They would, of course, go on to clinch a 3-1 victory.

Obiang was not the only player to disappoint during the first-half, but he should have been relishing the opportunity to impress, especially with Carlos Sanchez earning a lot of plaudits for his performance against Arsenal at the weekend.

The work that his teammates did during the second-half to turn the game around could be fantastic for Obiang as it would appear that he may initially be relying on the cup games for chances to prove himself. But based on the Wimbledon display, the West Ham hierarchy may perhaps be wondering why they did not sell the midfielder when they had the opportunity.
