Tottenham Hotspur were linked with making a club record offer for Max Meyer on transfer deadline day.

German newspaper BILD reported Spurs were preparing a stunning £38 million bid for the German international.

A move did not materialise, with the club investing their money in French international Moussa Sissoko instead, and Meyer has not yet proved Tottenham wrong.

He has had a particularly poor start to the season with Schalke, where he is playing alongside Spurs loanee Nabil Bentaleb.

Schalke have won only one game out of six and sit 16th out of 18 teams, and Meyer has struggled to make any kind of positive impact.

He has not been able to keep his starting place, a substitute in four matches, picked to start just twice.

Meyer has no goals and no assists to his name, and averages less than one per game in regard to chances created, shots attempted, and tackles won.

In the Europa League, Meyer has made two appearances, providing his one and only assist of the season, coming off the bench to help his side to a 1-0 win over Nice.

That was six games ago and Meyer has failed to build on that promise. His biggest impact of the campaign came for Germany, scoring for them against Finland in late August.

At only 21, Meyer is a player with strong potential – but he is not showing that he is player capable of living up to the huge price tag touted, that would have been able to make an immediate impact at Tottenham.

He would have needed time to grow into the role expected of him, and Tottenham are hoping for more than that right now, and certainly would have done for a record transfer fee.
