Josh King was hot property in the summer but ended up remaining with Bournemouth despite reports of a big-money move to Spurs.
Only two players scored more Premier League goals than Josh King between January and May this year. One, Romelu Lukaku, secured a £75 million move to Manchester United for his efforts while the other, Harry Kane, is at the centre of a discussion around the identity of the world’s greatest centre-forward.
King, however, remains in a Bournemouth side sitting second from bottom in the Premier League table. He’s got one goal in seven games so far in 2017/18 and you wonder whether the bubble might have burst.
King is certainly not displaying the kind of form that had The Telegraph claiming interest from Tottenham Hotspur and a £30 million price tag. The phrase ‘one season wonder’ comes to mind.
One-season wonder?
Consider this; before the 25-year-old’s 16 goal haul last time out, he had only scored 15 times in the previous eight seasons of his professional career combined. And while King was in extraordinary form over the second half of 2016/17, he is yet to prove that he can maintain that purple patch over an extended period.
All in all, the former Manchester United prospect is not looking like a £30 million centre-forward right now, although he is not being helped by a Bournemouth side who have struggled for creativity in the final third of late.
While King and Kane were trading goals last season, they couldn’t be further apart this. Tottenham’s number 10 hit the back of the net 13 times in September alone. On current form, you can’t see King reaching 13 all season.
