Leeds United goalkeeper Rob Green may have inadvertently affected Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion chances.
Wednesday went out of the play offs against Huddersfield Town last night on penalties.
And Jordan Rhodes’ failure to take a spot kick in the shoot out has been chastised by Wednesday supporters.
Rhodes, who is a clinical finisher, has a decent record from 12 yards over his career.
But it was a major surprise when he was not included in Wednesday’s first five penalty takers against Huddersfield.
After the match Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal confirmed that Rhodes hadn’t felt confident enough to take a penalty kick.
Ultimately, it proved costly – with Wednesday missing two of their spot kicks to crash out of the play offs.
And Rhodes’ crisis of confidence appears to stem back to the penalty he missed at Elland Road, during Wednesday’s match against Leeds back in February.
The Middlesbrough loanee backed himself from 12 yards in the Yorkshire derby, but he was thwarted by Leeds stopper Green.
Garry Monk’s men went on to win that contest 1-0, with Rhodes visibly crestfallen after missing his chance to equalise.
Since, Rhodes has not stepped up to take a penalty – and it may be that Green’s save proved to be even more crucial than it first appeared in the race for promotion.
