Darnell Fisher left Celtic during Brendan Rodgers’ first summer in charge, and is reportedly now a Premier League target.

When Darnell Fisher swapped Celtic for Rotherham United during Brendan Rodgers’ first window in charge of the Hoops, it seems unlikely that many Bhoys fans would have been overly disappointed with the decision to let him leave.

The right-back was hardly a regular during the three years that he spent in Celtic’s senior side, with injury keeping him out of the team for much of that time. And his year with Rotherham probably did little to make Rodgers think that he may have made a mistake in letting the 24-year-old leave.

But perhaps a report from The Sun on Fisher’s future coupled with the problems that Celtic have endured at right-back this term should leave Hoops fans slightly disappointed.

Fisher moved to Preston North End last summer following the Millers’ relegation and he proved to be a fantastic signing for the Lilywhites, who surprised many by finishing seventh in the Championship this season with their defence proving to be a particular strength. They only conceded 46 goals in the league this term.

And The Sun is now reporting that the Reading-born ace’s form has not gone unnoticed, with Preston keen to hand him a new contract as he is now on the radar of some Premier League sides.

Meanwhile at Parkhead, right-back has arguably been the one position that Celtic desperately need to address in the summer with Mikael Lustig struggling to prove that his best days are not behind him while Cristian Gamboa has undoubtedly been a disappointing signing.

Of course, the stage that Fisher would have been playing on at Celtic is significantly different to those at Deepdale, and Lustig’s importance over the past couple of years would have probably meant that a couple of loan moves would have been the best option for Fisher had he stayed. But perhaps the benefit of hindsight would suggest that Rodgers was a little hasty allowing Fisher to leave on a permanent basis two years ago with a potential Premier League move possibly now in his sights.
