Newcastle United are most people’s favourites to win the Championship this season.

Mohamed Diame celebrates scoring the first goal for Hull CityMohamed Diame during his time with Hull City

Newcastle midfielder Mohamed Diame has failed to register a goal for his new club in seven appearances, after his summer move from Hull City, and he told the Chronicle what he feels he needs to do in order to break his duck.

The 29-year-old Senegal international has impressed the Geordie faithful with his cavalier style, and his ability to maraud forward with the ball, showcasing his poise and power.

He has lacked the finishing touch during his time at St James’ Park, however, and was unlucky not to open his goalscoring account on Wednesday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers, where his shot smashed against the crossbar after a mazy run that saw him beat four players.

Diame discussed how he hopes to score more goals when speaking exclusively to the Chronicle:

“That’s the way to score more goals. I need to try more things like that. It didn’t come off against Wolves but hopefully it can happen on Saturday and I am saving myself for then. I’m getting there slowly, things always come eventually if you work hard. I need to keep working hard and all the other stuff will come. I am confident about this.”

One major positive for the Magpies this season is how well their goals have been dispersed throughout the side.

If Diame could start scoring on a more regular basis, they really would have a genuine goal threat from all over the pitch.

Newcastle currently sit third in the Championship table, and take on Aston Villa on Saturday in a game where both sides will be desperate to win for entirely different reasons.

Rafa Benitez’ men can jump back into the automatic promotion spots with a victory, but it will be far from easy, and with Villa sitting perilously in 18th position in the table, they will surely be fighting for their lives in order to gain all three points.

The game kicks-off at 17:30 tomorrow evening.
