Di Matteo’s fairytale Chelsea cup win is the story of the season

Chelsea fans should bask in the glory of their Wembley win, another chapter has been written in the club’s history.

When Chelsea knocked off Middlesborough back in 1997 they could not have dreamed what the next 15 years might bring.

There have been some glorious moments in between, three Premier League titles, watching the club become among the most feared in Europe, and of course a stunning two-leg victory over Barcelona a fortnight ago.

All of those memories will endure, yet there is something magical about Chelsea’s FA Cup Final success which just cannot be quantified.

Back in ’97, the goalscorers in the 2-0 victory were Roberto di Matteo and Eddie Newton.

At the new Wembley this weekend we saw both Di Matteo and Newton, his assistant, leading Chelsea towards glory.

Regardless of what happens in the Champions League Final, Chelsea have achieved a a feel good story to better all others.

Often football becomes more than just ‘a win’ it becomes about a story. Look at Ronaldo’s memorable 2002 World Cup comeback after his troubles in 1998.

Di Matteo’s Chelsea renaissance is just that. Rivals fans have attempted to belittle Chelsea in the past by saying the club ‘have no history’.

For a club that has existed since 1905 that is a ridiculous argument.

Nonetheless, while fans of Arsenal and Liverpool are looking back at their own history, Chelsea are busy making it right now.

Has there been a feel good story this season to top Di Matteo at Chelsea?
