Tim Sherwood told Optus Sport on Premier League Productions on Monday night that Aston Villa will feel ‘devastated’ by the proposed European Super League.
Before Monday night’s game between Leeds and Liverpool, all the talk was about the drama that ensued from the weekend and how it has rocked the world of football.
With 12 teams, including a number of English sides, agreeing on a breakaway league, it has caused a stir in football.
And with Villa being one of the founding members of the English league and one-time European Cup winners, Sherwood was asked how his former club would be feeling about matters from across the game.
“They will feel devastated,” said Sherwood. “They must feel let down by the so-called super 6.
“It’s poor on their front. I think the integrity of their league now. They must look at the owners, they see them and they have meetings all the time in London.
“They have to sit next to the other owners of the other big-six clubs, who have decided to explore the breakaway possibility and Villa must feel let down.
“And they are entitled to ask the questions. What happens to us? Did you even think about what might happen to our football club? Or the pyramid system?”
Given the reaction from the footballing world and the threats that are being made by the powers that be, it will be a surprise if such a proposal does actually go through.
Players and managers are now starting to speak against it and it won’t be too long before a civil war is brewing between those trying to breakaway.
Either way, whatever happens, certain owners and chief executives of clubs have shown their true colours.
