Leeds Live have reported that Joe Gelhardt has suffered a dead leg on Monday night after starting for the club’s Under-23 side against Crystal Palace. Andrew Taylor’s side eased past the Eagles to win 4-0.
Gelhardt, 19, was handed half an hour against Southampton on Saturday afternoon as Leeds looked for a winner against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints. It comes after returning from a back spasm, and a positive test.
With minutes and some match fitness required, Jesse Marsch decided to allow Gelhardt to start for the 23’s on Monday night at Elland Road. The night belonged to Crysencio Summerville, who nabbed a superb hat-trick.
Stuart McKinstry also got a goal, but it was a frustrating night for Gelhardt as he suffered a dead leg. Leeds Live report as such, stating he hobbled down the tunnel on 37 minutes – pointing to his left thigh with Rob Price.
Gelhardt injury: Big Leeds blow ahead of Watford clash
Gelhardt was likely to start – Monday being used to give him some match fitness. But it has potentially backfired. Marsch has confirmed he considered starting Gelhardt at Wolves – opting to use Patrick Bamford.
That also backfired, Bamford being ruled out until the end of the season – or close to it. Dan James was largely ineffective up top against Southampton. A new striker, like Gelhardt, is needed. Whether he is fit, remains to be seen.
If Gelhardt is ruled out, then Sam Greenwood is likely to play back-up to James against Watford on Saturday – while Rodrigo could play there, too.
