Reported Liverpool and Manchester City target Darwin Nunez has ‘a lot in common’ with Edinson Cavani and boasts the potential to play for the biggest teams in world football, agent Edgardo Lasalvia told FC Inter News.
Jorge Jesus always knew, deep down, that Nunez would only be passing through at the Estadio da Luz.
Like Angel di Maria, Axel Witsel, Victor Lindelof and more, the Uruguay international arrived at Benfica as a budding youngster with a point to prove and plenty to learn.
When he leaves, and he will leave – sooner rather than later, probably – he will depart as one of the most exciting prospects in European football.
Jesus is convinced that his pedigree poacher is on his way to becoming a ‘world-class’ centre-forward, insisting that a man snapped up from Segunda outfit Almeria will earn the club more than the £113 million Atletico Madrid paid for Joao Felix in 2019.
Will Benfica striker Darwin Nunez cost more than £100m?
With The Star reporting that Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are interested, a cross-continental bidding war could be about to kick off, particularly if Nunez produces more performances like last week’s double salvo against Barcelona in the Champions League.
The report adds that Manchester City are leading the chase as things stand. What’s more, Nunez is quicker, younger and better suited to Pep Guardiola’s high-pressing style than long-term target Harry Kane.
“Darwin is ready to play for any team on the globe. (He and Cavani) have a lot of things in common. We are convinced that Darwin is destined for great things,” said his agent, adding to the claims that Nunez is the second-coming of a Uruguayan legend.
“He is very happy and enjoying the moment, but keeping his feet on the ground and always trying to improve.

“The important thing is that he is happy now and wants to repay the trust of Benfica and the affection of the people by winning a title.
“We will discuss the possibilities of transfer possibly with the club managers, as it should be. For the moment we are calm and happy to see him on the pitch.
“Various top-level teams have contacted us but, for the moment the head is in continuing and growing with Benfica and with the Uruguayan national team.”
With five goals and no wins from their first seven Premier League games, if only struggling Southampton had snared Nunez when they had the chance…
