Leeds United are said to want Manchester United’s Cameron Borthwick-Jackson,

Leeds United are interested in a permanent move for Manchester United talent Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

Views on Borthwick-Jackson are divided, with Wolves fans still bemused by the hype after his truly terrible loan spell at the club last year.

The full-back was signed under Walter Zenga, but made only six appearances, before being cast aside by replacement Paul Lambert, and he headed back to Old Trafford before the season ended, with his final appearance coming in November.

There were some bright spots, Borthwick-Jackson played all 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 away win over Newcastle, and Wolves only lost two of the six games he played – but as far as his development went, it was a lost year.

He had begun 2016 by starring for Manchester United’s first team, stepping up amid an injury crisis and looking like a future England international.

Borthwick-Jackson starred as United kept a clean sheet over Liverpool at Anfield, and also impressed in a draw at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

Louis van Gaal was the manager who gave him his chance, and Jose Mourinho does not seem so enamoured, although the 20-year-old will hope to win him over in pre-season.

Dropping down to play first team football may be necessary for the full-back, and Leeds could be pulling off a tremendous signing if they can bring him in.

Like with any young player, projecting success is difficult, but it is also too harsh to write a player off on the back of six Championship games for Wolves where he did not disgrace himself, even if he couldn’t quite match expectations.

It would be somewhat of a gamble by Leeds, but they have Gaetano Berardi able to play as first choice left-back in any case, and Borthwick-Jackson could be an ideal understudy with a high resale value one day if he can recapture the assured form of his Premier League displays in 2015/16.
