Joelinton was rewarded for his stunning efforts this season with a first goal of the campaign for Newcastle, as the Magpies steamrolled over Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Two goals from Callum Wilson and yet another strike from Miguel Almiron helped Newcastle record a 4-0 win in addition to Joelinton’s effort, although the Brazil international will be furious with himself after what happened in the 65th minute.

Joelinton set to sit out for Newcastle

Unfortunately, the South American will not be able to build on his excellent display against Aston Villa when Newcastle travel to Southampton next week, after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season.

However, that isn’t the only reason he’ll be annoyed.

Watching from the St James’ Park stands today was Tite, who was on Tyneside to cast an eye over Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz, Philippe Coutinho and Joelinton as he prepares to name his World Cup squad.

The Newcastle No.7 is not guaranteed to be in the squad for Qatar, and with just three games remaining until the World Cup, he will be devastated to now be missing one of those – it could prove to be costly for his chances of being selected.

Joelinton may have already done enough for Newcastle

In our view, Joelinton could still be named in the World Cup squad by Tite, mainly due to the fact Brazil do not have many midfielders like him.

In the last round of international fixtures, Tite selection Fred, Fabinho, Bruno, Lucas Paqueta, Everton Ribeiro and Casemiro for his midfield.

However, none of those players possess the physical attributes of Joelinton, which help him make a significant impact in almost every area of the field.

Fabinho and Casemiro are probably the most comparable options in terms of their defensive qualities, although they do not have the athleticism of Joelinton – his strides can take him from one box to the other in seconds.

Hopefully, missing the trip to Southampton next week doesn’t have any repercussions for Joelinton’s World Cup hopes.
