Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday returned to Ibrox in January after a disappointing loan spell with Azerbaijani side FK Gabala, but should he already be questioning his future with the Scottish giants?
The 26-year-old has featured four times in the Scottish Premiership since manager Graeme Murty decided to bring the central midfielder back to Glasgow, but has clocked up a total of just 56 minutes in Scotland’s top flight.
It got worse for Halliday on Sunday afternoon, as he was handed only four minutes late in the second half as Rangers beat Hamilton 5-3 at New Douglas Park – despite Jason Holt’s suspension ruling him out of the game.
Halliday is behind Holt in the pecking order, as well as January recruits Sean Goss and Greg Docherty, who started the game against Hamilton as Josh Windass scored a sublime hat-trick to exact revenge on Martin Canning’s side.
With Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans looking to recover from injury sooner rather than later and expected to return to the starting line-up, as well as teenager Ross McCrorie at the base of Murty’s diamond, what is left for Halliday?
Effectively, he is seventh in the rankings and is unlikely to be afforded much more than the odd cameo role or a cup appearance with competition aplenty in the middle of the park at Ibrox.
Although he has spoken of his delight to return to Glasgow following his loan with Gabala, surely Halliday will be considering what he has left at Ibrox.
Unless a string of injuries re-occur, Halliday is likely to be overlooked by Murty between now and the end of the season and surely his future will be a talking point come the summer. He has two and a half years remaining on his current Ibrox deal.
