A week ago it appeared Tottenham Hotspur were edging towards making their first signing of the summer.

Following reports in The Sun that Spurs were moving for Nice winger Vincent Marcel, French outlet Footmercato reported that the 20-year-old had agreed personal terms with the North London club.

No progress has seemingly been made on a transfer since, and if Spurs were hoping Marcel may go on strike to force a move, they can think again.

Marcel was involved at the weekend as Nice played their first friendly match of pre-season, against Swiss side Nyon.

The winger came on as a 67th minute substitute – and scored as his side sealed a 4-0 away win.

There is still plenty of time for Spurs to get their man, but this one isn’t going to get ugly, or drag out like Tottenham’s pursuit of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou last summer.

N’Koudou was left waiting in a hotel in London for weeks after agreeing a switch in July, and only seeing it completed on deadline day as Marseille proved tough negotiators.

Whatever the outcome this time around, Tottenham fans will hope that Marcel is worth it if he does arrive, potentially as N’Koudou’s replacement.
