Rotherham United are doomed and their talented young midfielder may be on Rangers’ radar again

Rotherham's Will Vaulks

When your team is 24 points adrift at the bottom of the table, it seems rather frivolous to pick out a player as a ‘bright spark’. Yet, when Rotherham United are finally put out of their misery and their relegation from the Championship is confirmed, potentially this weekend at the earliest, it’s unlikely that Will Vaulks will be preparing for life in League One.

The 23-year-old arrived at the New York Stadium from Scottish Premiership side Falkirk last summer and, if Pedro Caixinha aims to add a designated defensive midfielder to Rangers’ ranks, there’s a chance he could return north of the border in the summer.

The Daily Mail claimed last summer that Rangers were one of a long list of sides monitoring the progress of Vaulks, who then plied his trade at centre-half, after a string of fine performances for Falkirk.

According to the publication, Sporting Lisbon, Norwich City, Wigan Athletic and Glasgow neighbours Celtic were all interested. Rangers, meanwhile, had witnessed Vaulks’ qualities first-hand. He netted the winner against them in a 2-1 Falkirk victory last season.

However, with Brendan Rodgers’ side well stocked in the midfield department, Stuart Armstrong, Scott Brown, Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton joined by tenacious scrapper Kouassi Eboue in January, there is likely to be less competition for Vaulks’ signature this summer.

And though he only inked a three-year contract at Rotherham in July, as reported by the BBC, their impending doom means his future at the Yorkshire club seems a lot less secure.

Therefore, Rangers, who could do with reinforcements both at centre-back and in defensive midfield, could do worse that to hand him a lifeline.
