Tottenham Hotspur made a sizeable profit on the Austrian and he now looks set for a Stoke City exit, with reports suggesting a return to Germany.
According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Stoke City are ready to take a hit on former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer to get the centre-back off their books.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was hailed for another canny piece of business when he sold the £4million signing at a £14million profit last summer. But, unfortunately for the Austrian international and his current club, he could not prevent the Potters from ending their 10-year association with the top flight.
Stoke’s relegation means Wimmer looks set to leave, with Hannover reportedly in talks to bring the 25-year-old back to the Bundesliga.
It was in Germany’s top flight where Wimmer made his name, his impressive performances for Cologne enough to convince Tottenham to bring him to North London in 2015. And a return to Germany could be just what the defender needs to rediscover his best form.
To brand Wimmer a flop would be harsh, given how well he performed for Tottenham when an injury to Jan Vertonghen forced him into action alongside Toby Alderweireld two years ago.
Those early outings suggested Tottenham had signed another bargain, but that was as good as it got for Wimmer and he was sold for £18million in a deal that had the majority of Spurs fans laughing.
Having fallen out of favour at Stoke, Wimmer will be hoping a return to Germany is the catalyst his faltering career needs. He racked up 73 appearances for Cologne and looked a quality centre-back in the making.
For now Wimmer will be remembered as little more than a player whose brief stop-off at Tottenham earned them an unexpected windfall, and yet it could ultimately be Hannover who benefit from a bargain signing of their own.
