Former Rangers attacker Steven Naismith has re-ignited debate about his future after admitting he wants to return to Ibrox
Naismith played 140 games for Rangers between 2007 and 2012 but left under a cloud when he forced an exit after the club was liquidated.
There is still some bitterness among supporters towards the 31-year-old, but surely it is time to set this aside and take a practical view.
Naismith is clearly talented, Rangers saw this first time around, he is an international, and just 18 months ago Norwich spent £8.5 million to buy him. But this is just the backdrop.
The key reason Rangers should bring him back is his desire. Naismith says he is a Rangers fan, and genuinely wants to play for the club.
He told The Scotsman: “A return to Rangers would appeal. I love hearing how things are going. I still support Rangers and I want them to do well.”
Naismith may have acted ill-advisedly in 2012, but he has what not many players do, a passion for the club.
Combine that with his talent, and a desire to prove a point and make amends, and Naismith could be exactly what Rangers need right now.
