Shay Given has shared how Joe Hart’s told him that he is ‘desperate’ to prove to everyone that he is still a ‘top keeper’ following his free transfer to Tottenham.

Former Newcastle shot-stopper, Given, claimed that Jose Mourinho would have told Hart and his agent that he is joining Spurs, not ‘just to be a back-up’, but to challenge Hugo Lloris and Paulo Gazzaniga, as he told talkSPORT (18/08/20 at 7:45 am).

Following Hart’s arrival, Spurs now have three keepers who will be vying for the main spot in between the sticks – Lloris, Hart himself and Gazzaniga.

Given thinks that Hart still has the quality to perform at the top-level, as he shared what will happen with Tottenham’s goalkeeping trio now.

“I do think Joe has so much to offer still to any football club,” Given told talkSPORT. “I think Tottenham have a great signing – You see some of the pictures recently. He has been doing some gym work and he’s absolutely shredded. He’s raring to go. Joe has had a lot of people knocking him in the last couple of years.

“I believe he has plenty to offer and Hugo Lloris is thinking ‘Oh, here we go there is a challenge on my hands’. Joe’s 33 and Lloris is 33. It’s game on for both of them really.

“It’s not for me to say who is going to be one, two or three. But Mourinho has spoken to Joe, and his agent, sat him down and I suppose sold him the dream in the sense that ‘you’re not coming in just to be a back-up, or a number three, I want you to be number one and I want you to challenge Lloris. I want you to push him and push him’.

“I just think he’s hungry. I have spoken to Joe, I still keep in touch with him and he’s just hungry to get playing again. He’s desperate to prove to everyone that he’s still a top keeper.”

Hart has gone from being England’s number one at a major tournament to struggling to earn game time at Burnley.

His fall from the top has been pretty spectacular and many believe his days as a top-quality number one are already at an end.

But at Spurs, and under the stewardship of Mourinho, he can prove all those doubters wrong because there aren’t many man-motivators better than the out-spoken Portuguese in Tottenham’s dugout.

If Hart can get back to his best then his return to form will be one of the best turnarounds in recent times.
