Steven Gerrard’s newest Rangers recruit arrives highly recommended.

Rangers confirmed the free transfer signing of Nigerian defender Leon Balogun on Friday afternoon.

Balogun spent the second half of the season on loan to Wigan Atheltic from Brighton and Hove Albion, where his contract has expired.

Wigan lost just one of the 11 Championship matches in which Balogun played – rising from 22nd to 13th position as a result, before being condemned to relegation after entering administration.

It meant the 32-year-old would not return to the DW Stadium and allowed Rangers to pounce.

Balogun will compete with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and George Edmundson at Rangers, who recently lost another centre-back Nikola Katic to a long-term injury lay-off.

And this is what those of a Wigan persuasion have had to say about the Ibrox new boy…

Balogun joins his fellow Nigerian international Joe Aribo at Rangers.

The former Brighton player spent time at Hertha Berlin as a youth and went on to represent fellow German sides Hannover 96, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf, Darmstadt 98 and Mainz 05.
