Dermot Gallagher has said on Sky Sports that the referee was right to change his decision regarding Arsenal central defender Gabriel in the Premier League match against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

The former Premier League referee has said that Arsenal centre-back Gabriel did not deserve to be sent off for apparently kicking out at Leeds striker Bamford.

In stoppage time, referee Chris Kavanagh sent off Arsenal’s £27 million (The Guardian) defender Gabriel for kicking out at Bamford.

Leeds were also awarded a penalty.

However, there was a VAR check.

Kavanagh reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor, and he subsequently overturned both the decisions.

Gabriel was shown a yellow card for his challenge on Leeds and England international striker Bamford.

No penalty was given.

And Gallagher believes that VAR was correctly used in this instance.

Gallagher said: “If they had played without VAR, there would have been a penalty not given against Saliba, there would have been a penalty given incorrectly in the end, a red card and a player facing a three-match ban. So all that was corrected by VAR.”

Arsenal won the Premier League match against Leeds 1-0.

England international star Bukayo Saka scored the only goal at Elland Road in the first half.

Bamford could not convert a penalty in the second half.

Arsenal are at the top of the Premier League table, while Leeds remain in danger of getting sucked in a relegation battle.
