Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Dejan Lovren conceded a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Dom Calvert-Lewin as the English striker sped away from the Croatia international towards the end of the match.
Gallagher believes Pawson was right to point to the spot, which saw Wayne Rooney slam home the equaliser past Simon Mignolet to secure a draw away from home and keep Sam Allardyce’s reign in charge unbeaten.
“I think it is a penalty. It’s reminiscent of the penalty Aaron Ramsey got against Burnley a few weeks ago,” Gallagher said.
“It’s not the biggest push in the world but if you put your arms on the back like that, the referee is bound to give a penalty, and he was correct to do so. It was another quality performance in a big derby, this time from referee Craig Pawson.”
Everton were pegged back in their own half for much of the match, but defended astutely despite Sadio Mane missing a guilt-edged opportunity where he should have squared the ball but instead went alone.
The draw leaves Everton in tenth place in the Premier League, with Allardyce now earning two wins and a draw in his three games in charge.
He will be hoping to keep that run of form going when he takes his Toffees to St. James’ Park to face an out-of-form Newcastle side who have lost six of their last seven Premier League matches.
