Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has suggested that Rangers should not have been awarded the second penalty against St. Mirren at Ibrox at the weekend, as quoted in The Daily Record.

Rangers won the Scottish Premiership match this past Saturday afternoon 4-0, thanks to three penalties.

Steven Gerrard’s side were actually awarded four spot-kicks, with James Tavernier failing to convert one of the three he took.

Former Premier League referee Gallagher does not believe that the second penalty that was awarded to Rangers for a challenge on striker Jermain Defoe from Paul McGinn was the right decision.

The Daily Record quotes Gallagher as saying: “I wasn’t sure he caught him. Out of the four penalties, I think this is the only one I wasn’t sure about. I think he’s got the other three right.”

Title challenge

Rangers were the better team against St. Mirren, and the Ibrox club are very much in the race for the Scottish Premiership title this season.

The Gers are second in the league table at the moment with 48 points from 24 matches, six points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Rangers will return to action on Wednesday evening when they take on Aberdeen away from home in the Scottish Premiership.
