Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has told The Scottish Sun that Rangers will finish second in the Scottish Premiership table this season.

McInnes, who played for Rangers from 1995 until 2000, made the comments ahead of the Scottish Premiership game between Aberdeen and the Gers at Ibrox this afternoon.

Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 69 points from 34 matches.

Gerrard’s side are eight points clear of third-placed Aberdeen and 12 points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic, who look set to clinch the Scottish Premiership title this campaign.

Aberdeen manager McInnes believes that Rangers will finish second in the table this campaign.

McInnes told The Scottish Sun: “I am actually not thinking about second place if truth be told. If we were sitting with the points that Rangers have got I’d be pretty confident of securing second spot.

“They have been very good of late but we always seem to play Rangers when they are in good form.

“They were free-scoring last week and I wouldn’t expect them to drop the points we would need them to drop to give any encouragement.“

Meanwhile, Rangers youngster Josh McPake has said that he has been watching Jermain Defoe in training.

The 17-year-old winger has been playing well for the Rangers youth team this season and has also trained with the senior side.

Interestingly, the youngster has been linked with a move away from Rangers in the summer transfer window, with The Daily Record claiming that AS Roma, Liverpool and Borussia Monchengladbach are keeping tabs on him.

McPake told The Herald: “I like Ryan Kent and I watch him closely to get an insight to what he is doing. I watch Jermain Defoe as well. The work rate he has, even off the park, is incredible. He never lets anything slip.

“The first team boys talk away to all the young boys and they let you be part of the group. They tell me to express myself and that makes you enjoy it even more.

“I have spoken to Jermain a couple of times and sometimes after training he will take me for ten or 15 minutes and we will do a couple of finishing drills.”
