Rangers have failed with a move to sign Aberdeen midfielder Kenny McLean.
Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has told The Scottish Sun that midfielder Kenny McLean is not for sale after a failed bid from rivals Rangers.
The Gers have already added eight signings this summer as Pedro Caixinha overhauls his squad, with two midfielders joining the Ibrox ranks.
Celtic’s James Forrest and Aberdeen’s Kenny McLean
Ryan Jack joined the club on a free transfer from Aberdeen with his contract at Pittodrie expiring, before Carlos Pena signed for the Gers from Chivas Guadalajara.
Despite those additions, Caixinha is still looking to boost his midfield options, with a new £1.3million bid on the table for Norwich City midfielder Graham Dorrans according to The Express.
Another midfielder has been on Rangers’ wish list, with the Daily Record noting that they submitted a bid worth just £300,000 for Aberdeen ace Kenny McLean – and that offer was rejected.
McLean, 25, grew up supporting Rangers and even started his career in their youth ranks, before making his name with 24 goals in 152 games for St Mirren, which earned him a move to Aberdeen in February 2015.
The midfielder has been vital for Derek McInnes since his arrival, notching 14 goals in 111 games for the Dons, which triggered interest from Rangers – but with an asking price of more than £1million and a reluctance to sell to the Gers after they signed midfielder Jack, Rangers’ pursuit appears to be over.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes
Now, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has told The Scottish Sun that Rangers did make a bid for McLean, but they have no intention of selling, with McLean himself ‘relaxed’ about the situation.
“A bid was made for Kenny but it was rejected like we’d already said it would be,” said McInnes. “No player will be leaving here this summer, I have been given assurances about that. “We feel enough players have left recently so we are trying to bring people in now. We don’t need to sell and we are not going to sell.”
“Kenny is relaxed about it, he’s under contract here and he’s more than comfortable with it. We are looking forward to the season with Kenny in our team. I believe we can be as strong again this season as we’ve been the last few years,” he added.
