Rangers are again being linked with a new move for Aberdeen’s Kenny McLean.
Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has told The Scottish Sun that he is planning new talks with midfielder Kenny McLean over a new deal at Pittodrie.
The Dons swooped to sign McLean from St. Mirren back in 2015, and the Scot has starred since making his move, scoring 16 goals in 121 games.
As reported by the Daily Record over the summer, Aberdeen snubbed a £300,000 bid from Rangers as the Ibrox club looked to bring in McLean as part of their summer overhaul.
Aberdeen stood firm and kept hold of the 25-year-old, but the Dons do face a problem, as McLean is out of contract at the end of the season, and could walk away for nothing in 2018.
Now, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has spoken to The Scottish Sun about McLean’s future, admitting that he has spoken to the midfielder about extending his deal, and hopes to reach an agreement.
“We have spoken to Kenny and Anthony [O’Connor], who are out of contract, as well as one or two of the younger ones,” said McInnes. “It’s been ongoing. These things can take a bit longer, but we are in discussions. We’ll try to find a way to make both happen if possible. If we can’t, we will deal with it and move on,” he added.
Rangers will be paying close attention to how McLean’s contract talks progress, and they will be hoping to repeat history by raiding Aberdeen for one of their midfielders on a free transfer.
The Gers snapped up former Dons captain Ryan Jack on a free transfer this past summer after his Aberdeen contract expired, and Rangers will now be hoping to repeat the trick with McLean.
A former Rangers youth player who grew up supporting the Ibrox club, McLean may be tempted by a move back to Glasgow, and whilst Rangers may hope to sign him a cut-price deal in January, Aberdeen now face the very real threat of losing another important first-team player to Rangers on a free transfer.
