Glasgow Rangers ran out 3-0 winners at Ibrox to move themselves to within three points of their Scottish Premiership rivals.

Derek McInnes has told Aberdeen’s official website that Rangers were worthy winners when the two sides met at Ibrox on Wednesday, and added that Graeme Murty’s men showed everything he wanted to see from his own side.

Despite having home advantage, Rangers would not have been particularly overwhelming favourites for the contest having gone into the game off the back of two consecutive defeats, while the Dons had beaten Kilmarnock in their most recent game.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

But it was the Gers who secured the three points, with a brace from James Tavernier and a goal from Carlos Pena seeing Murty’s side take the spoils in emphatic fashion. And after the game, McInnes was not able to defend his players after their display at Ibrox.

“We got what we deserved,” he told Aberdeen’s official website. “The initial start to the game, we spoke about trying to keep the crowd quiet or bring some pressure onto the Rangers players after the last couple of results that they have had. But we gave them the complete opposite. We gave them a lift.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“It was an unnecessary penalty to give away. There needed to be more restraint and awareness. That helped their crowd get into it and from that point the Rangers players were brighter than ours. They showed more energy in the middle of the park. They won more headers. They were more aggressive. Everything that I expected from my own team to be honest in the early part of the game.”

It will surely be Murty’s task now to try and make sure that his side do not get carried away about their performance as they face the same opposition at the weekend, and they will undoubtedly be wanting to show that they are much better than what they showed on Wednesday.

If Rangers can win once again, that would move the Gers up to second – above Aberdeen – and would surely prove a major boost for the Light Blues as they continue their search for their next manager.

It had appeared that the next boss may have been taking over with the side basically in mid-table and extremely low on confidence, but after Wednesday’s victory, there should be optimism that the new boss may be taking over at a good time – if they manage to get him in soon.
