Derek Johnstone has told the Evening Times that Rangers should hand Kenny Miller a new contract this summer, and suggested that the fans will go ballistic if he is playing for another team in the Scottish Premiership next season.

Miller’s current deal expires at the end of this term, but while his status as the club’s current top goalscorer in the top flight – he has scored eight times this term – would tempt many into handing the 37-year-old a new contract, his age appears to be leaving doubt in the Gers hierarchy’s mind about a deal.

But Johnstone has urged the Light Blues to hand Miller the extension he deserves, and suggested that allowing to deal to expire could come back to haunt them next season.

“He has been doing his coaching with the Under-20s but he still has so much to offer as a player and I think that he will be given a deal,” he told the Evening Times.

“I know there are clubs that won’t hand out two or three year contracts to players once they get to a certain age but Kenny is more than worth another twelve months.

Based on the fact that Miller has been so influential this term, and not always in a central striker role, there are surely few teams in the top flight who would not be improved by having the veteran in their squad for a year, perhaps maybe two.

And while Rangers may be hesitant about handing Miller a deal if they do not expect him to play too often, it could surely be argued that just having him around the squad will make any deal worthwhile as his longevity and professionalism should undoubtedly inspire the rest of the squad and the academy prospects looking to make an impact at Ibrox.
