Ibrox legend Derek Johnstone has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times what Steven Gerrard’s Rangers can learn from Celtic.

Johnstone, who starred for Rangers in the 1970s and the 1980s, has suggested that the Gers need to win matches late on just like Celtic have done this season.

The Hoops may have clinched the Scottish Premiership title for the eighth time this season, but the Glasgow giants often had to rely on late goals and had to grind out some results on many occasions this campaign.

Johnstone wrote about Rangers in The Glasgow Evening Times: “Right throughout the season – starting from Aberdeen away – there have been games that they should have won and didn’t and late goals were really damaging.

“Look at St Johnstone at Ibrox, away to Livingston and Dundee, the matches with Hibernian. It is all ifs, buts and maybes, but it shows the margins were fine this season.

“Celtic haven’t had a great season, but look at the number of times they have left it late or won games when they weren’t playing well. That is what we have got to learn to do.”

Challenging next season

Celtic were much better than Rangers after the mid-season winter break, and it did not look like very likely that the Gers will be able to catch them once the Hoops were on a roll.

The Gers, though, have progressed well under manager Gerrard this season, and the Ibrox faithful will be confident that the team can give Celtic a run for their money next season.

Rangers have shown signs that they can compete with Celtic, and perhaps a couple of good signings in the summer transfer window will help the Gers close the gap.
