Bruno Alves became Glasgow Rangers’ first signing of the summer, arriving at Ibrox on a two-year deal.

Derek Johnstone has told the Evening Times that while Lee Wallace has been an inspirational leader, he would like to see Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha make summer signing Bruno Alves the club’s new captain.

Alves became the Gers’ first signing of the summer and Caixinha’s first acquisition since he succeeded Mark Warburton at Ibrox, signing a two-year deal with the Scottish Premiership side (via Evening Times).

And Johnstone believes that the 35-year-old is the perfect player to take on a more senior role at the club straight away, and may even be a better candidate to wear the armband than current skipper Wallace.

“I would have no qualms if Pedro said ‘Bruno, you are my captain’,” he told the Evening Times.

“He will be at the heart of that defence, he can talk to everyone around him and he can lead by example. That is maybe what Rangers have been lacking.

“That is no disrespect to Lee Wallace. He has been a good captain of the club and his performances are the inspiration for those around him.

“But if you are looking for somebody that is going to galvanise people, being at centre-half certainly helps. For me, Bruno would be the ideal captain.”

While Wallace has been a popular player amongst the Ibrox faithful having remained a key part of their plans following their plight from the Champions League to the bottom division, it may not be too great a surprise if supporters also backed Alves for the role.

His experience and quality, coupled with the fact that he will feature at the spine of the team, arguably makes him an excellent candidate for the role, and the fact that he is a Caixinha signing perhaps makes it more likely that a change will be made.

And while Wallace has overseen some success as skipper, it may perhaps not be out of the question to suggest that taking the captaincy away may help him rediscover his best form after a difficult year.
