Derek Johnstone has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers were right to sign Jason Cummings instead of Steven Naismith in the January transfer window.

Rangers have recruited Cummings on loan from Nottingham Forest in the Championship in England.

The 22-year-old former Hibernian striker has joined the Ibrox club on loan from Forest until the end of the season.

The Gers were linked with a move for former Ibrox star Naismith, who has since moved to Heart of Midlothian on loan from Norwich City in the Championship in England for the rest of the season.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers were interested in the 31-year-old Scotland international, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a forward.

The former Kilmarnock star was on the books of Rangers from 2007 until 2012 and was quite successful during his spell at Ibrox.

Rangers legend Johnstone believes that Graeme Murty’s side were right to sign 22-year-old Scotland international striker Cummings instead of Naismith in the January transfer window.

Steven Naismith of Rangers celebrates at the end of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on September 18, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Johnstone wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “Some people will maybe be surprised that Graeme didn’t go for Steven Naismith, but would you rather have him or Cummings? For me, Jason is a more natural striker and that is something that the squad has needed for a long time.”
