Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have “phenomenal” support, according to Derek Johnstone.

Speaking to The Glasgow Evening Times, Derek Johnstone has described Rangers fans as “phenomenal” and believes Club 1872 deserve a spot the board at Ibrox.

The supporter’s organisation sealed a £1 million deal to buy half of Mike Ashley’s stake in Rangers and become the club’s second biggest shareholders.

Club 1872 is consistently enjoying a surge in members and Johnstone claims it is only right that they have a say over the major decisions which the Gers make at board level.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “The number of fans that are joining up is great and I hope more do that. The support Rangers get from the fans is phenomenal.

“I think they have got to be heard and there has to come a time when there is a representative on the board.

“Club 1872 are the second biggest shareholders and they deserve a say in what is going at Rangers.”

Rangers are preparing for their second successive season in the Scottish Premiership after spending four years slugging it out in the lower divisions.

And Johnstone added that the club’s supporters deserve a lot of praise for the resillience shown over the past few years.

“If anybody deserves praise, it is the Rangers fans for what they have had to go through over the last few years.

“I think the club have got to sit down and look at what the supporters have done and are doing and find a place for them going forward.”

Pedro Caixinha’s side, who were knocked out of the Europa League at the first hurdle by Progres Niederkorn last week in arguably the club’s worst ever result, get their Premiership season underway on August 6 with a trip to Motherwell.
