Glasgow Rangers defender Lee Wallace should continue turning up for Scotland, suggests former Ibrox star Derek Johnstone.

Derek Johnstone has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers defender Lee Wallace should continue to play for the Scotland national team.

The 29-year-old is one of the best left-backs in the Scottish Premiership and is a key player in the current Rangers team.

The former Heart of Midlothian defender made his debut for Scotland in 2009, and was part of the squad that faced Lithuania and Slovakia this month.

The left-back, though, did not play a single minute, as Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Robertson, who is 22 years of age, plays his club football for Premier League outfit Hull City, while 19-year-old Tierney is on the books of Celtic at the moment.

Former Rangers star Johnstone, who is 62 years of age, believes that Wallace should continue to turn up for Scotland and not make a decision on his international future just yet.

“It can be good to get away from your club for a few days and to go and train with Scotland,” Johnstone wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times. “It can benefit a player and help his game but, of course, you want to play as well.

“It looks like Robertson and Tierney will be the first two picks but if there are injuries and suspensions then Lee is more than capable of performing for his country.

“He is still a relatively young man and if I was him I would certainly give it until the end of the campaign before considering his future.

“If he can’t get into the side over the next few months then, as he approaches 30, he might think that he won’t get a chance and it would be best to focus on Rangers.”

Wallace is a very good and experienced left-back, and he will get his chances for Scotland in the coming months.

The Rangers defender should not feel disheartened at the competition for places, and he should use it to better himself.
